Rapaxavis was named by Morschhauser et al. (2009). Its type is Rapaxavis pani.
It was assigned to Euenantiornithes by Morschhauser et al. (2009); to Longipterygithidae by Zhou and Wang (2010); to Enantiornithes by O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013), O'Connor et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2014) and Wang and Liu (2015); and to Longipterygidae by O'Connor et al. (2011), O'Connor et al. (2011), Wang et al. (2014), Zhang et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2014) and Wang et al. (2015).
