Ziphius blasii was named by Brandt (1873). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Taman Peninsula, which is in a Serravallian marine claystone in the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Mesoplodon blasii by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Mesoplodon blasiusi by Trouessart (1904).
