Taxonomy
Sagenites was named by Mojsisovics (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-m Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites reticulatus. It is the type genus of Sagenitidae.

It was assigned to Haloritidae by von Mojsisovics (1896), Smith (1927); to Sagenitinae by Spath (1951); to Sagenitidae by Tozer (1981), Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
