Taxonomy
Cavia capensis was named by Pallas (1766). It is extant.

It was recombined as Hyrax capensis by Hermann (1783); it was recombined as Procavia capensis by Storr (1783), Olds and Shoshani (1982), Pickford (2005) and Rasmussen and Gutiérrez (2010).
