Polysphincta was named by Gravenhorst (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Polysphinctini.
It was assigned to Pimplinae by Statz (1936); to Ichneumonidae by Cockerell (1921), Carpenter (1992); and to Polysphinctini by Klopfstein and Spasojevic (2019).
