Baryconus was named by Forster (1856). It is extant. It is the type genus of Baryconini.
It was assigned to Scelionini by Ashmead (1893); to Baryconini by Kozlov (1970), Masner (1976); to Scelioninae by Johnson (1992); and to Scelionidae by Carpenter (1992).
