Cephus was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cephidae, Cephoidea, Cephinae.

It was assigned to Tenthredines by Latreille (1802); to Cephidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Cephinae by Taeger et al. (2010).
