Trichopeza was named by Rondani (1856). It is extant. It is the type genus of Trichopezinae.

It was assigned to Empididae by Carpenter (1992); to Trichopezinae by Sinclair and Cumming (2006); and to Trichopezini by Wahlberg and Johanson (2018).
