Taxonomy
Ptychopteria pusilla was named by Hoare (1993). Its type specimen is USNM 314063, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bramwell Member, Bluestone Formation, which is in a Serpukhovian transition zone/lower shoreface shale/siltstone in the Bluestone Formation of West Virginia.

R. D. Hoare 1993Ptychopteria with hingeline forming greatest valve length; large posterior wing and relatively large anterior auricle.

Small Ptychopteria with long, straight hingeline forming greatest length of valve; beaks low, located just anterior to midlength; large posterior wing forming angle of 60? with hingeline; smaller but relatively large anterior auricle set off from shell body by narrow sulcus; anterior margin abruptly rounded into hingeline; ventral margin broadly rounded; surface orna-mentation of relatively coarse, comarginal wrinkles which reflect anterior sulcus; wrinkles less strongly developed on posterior wing; no trace of radial ornamentation present.
