Taxonomy
Hydrochoeropsis was named by Kraglievich (1930). It is not extant. Its type is Hydrochoeropsis dasseni. It was considered monophyletic by Pérez et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Hydrochoerinae by Prado et al. (1998), Pérez et al. (2017).
