Taxonomy
Palaeoleon was named by Rice (1969). Its type is Palaeoleon ferrogeneticus. It is the type genus of Palaeoleontinae.

It was assigned to Neuroptera by Rice (1969); to Planipennia by Carpenter (1992); to Palaeoleontinae by Martins-Neto (1992); and to Palaeoleontidae by Menon and Makarkin (2008).
