Sister taxa: Thalassoleon macnallyae, Thalassoleon mexicanus

Type specimen: CBM-PV 087, a partial skull (basicranial region of skull, left dentary with C, P/2-M/2 and right dentary with C, P/2-P/4). Its type locality is Matsukura Industry Co., Ltd. Stone Quarry, which is in a Messinian/Zanclean marine sandstone in the Senhata Formation of Japan.

Ecology: amphibious piscivore

Distribution: found only at Matsukura Industry Co., Ltd. Stone Quarry
