Type specimens:
- Metaxytherium crataegense: AMNH 26838, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Florindin Company Mine, which is in a Hemingfordian/Barstovian marine horizon in the Torreya Formation of Florida.
- Metaxytherium calvertense: USNM 16757, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Plum Point, south, Zone 10, which is in a Langhian estuary/bay sandstone in the Calvert Formation of Maryland.

• Miocene of Peru (1 collection), United States (14: Florida, Maryland, Virginia)
• Oligocene of United States (1: Florida)
