Sister taxa: Palatobaena cohen, Palatobaena gaffneyi, Palatobaena knellerorum

Type specimen: YPM-PU 16839, a partial skull (a partially distorted right half of a skull). Its type locality is Cedar Point Quarry, which is in a Tiffanian fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic in the Fort Union Formation of Wyoming.
