Sister taxon: Aulophyseter mediatlanticus
Type specimen: USNM 11313, a skull. Its type locality is Sharktooth Hill, which is in a Langhian shoreface siltstone in the Temblor Formation of California.
Ecology: aquatic piscivore-carnivore
Distribution: found only at Sharktooth Hill
