Type specimens:

  • Protitanotherium emarginatum: PU 11242, a skull. Its type locality is Kennedy's Hole, which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Uinta Formation of Utah.
  • Protitanotherium superbum: Amer. Mus. 2501 (p3).
  • Sthenodectes australis: Its type locality is Titanothere Hill, which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Devil's Graveyard Formation of Texas.
