Type specimens:
- Paraenhydrocyon wallovianus: AMNH 6858, a partial skull (rostral part of skull)
- Temnocyon venator: AMNH 81086, a partial skull (partial skull and lower jaws). Its type locality is Syndyoceras Quarry, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Harrison Formation of Nebraska.

• Harrisonian of United States (6: Nebraska, Texas, Wyoming collections)
• Oligocene of United States (2: Oregon)
