Type specimens:

  • Miotylopus gibbi: YPM 10328, a partial skull (the palate and lower jaws with complete dentition, except that the third molar is lacking in each jaw). Its type locality is Big Muddy Creek, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in Wyoming.
  • Dyseotylopus migrans: CIT 1721, a skull. Its type locality is Kew Quarry, which is in a Whitneyan/Arikareean terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Sespe Formation of California.
  • Miotylopus bathygnathus: MCZ 2924, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Sixty Six Mountain (Upper), which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in the Harrison Formation of Wyoming.
