Type specimens:
- Desmatochoerus megalodon: CM 1325, a partial skull (front of the skull and lower jaws of a young individual, but with all the permanent teeth in position). Its type locality is Lower Monroe Creek, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.
- Merycoides giganteus: F:AM 33316, a skull (Skull with C/-M3). Its type locality is Big Muddy Creek, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in Wyoming.
- Mesoreodon wheeleri: YPM 13950, a partial skull (Skull with I1-I3 alv. and C/-M3 (P1-P2 rt.)). Its type locality is Fort Logan, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in Montana.
