Type specimens:

  • Merycoides cursor: CM 1222, a partial skeleton (a skull and mandible nearly complete, the lower portion of a shoulder blade, part of a humerus, the upper end of the radius, the head and distal end of the femu). Its type locality is Canyon Ferry Reservoir Earl Douglass Location, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial horizon in Montana.
  • Merycoides nebraskensis: F:AM 33363, a partial skull (Partial skull with I1-M3 and mandible with i1-m3 (p2-p4, br.)). Its type locality is Signal Butte, which is in a Geringian terrestrial horizon in the Gering Formation of Nebraska.
  • Merycoides nebraskensis blairi: F:AM 42306, a partial skull.

Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore

Distribution:

• Miocene of United States (2: Montana, Wyoming collections)

• Arikareean of United States (1: Wyoming)

• Oligocene of United States (2: Nebraska, South Dakota)

Total: 5 collections each including a single occurrence
