The species epithet buitreraensis refers to La Buitrera locality, near Cerro Polica town, in Ro Negro Province, Argentina.

Type specimen: MPCA PV 307, a partial skeleton (a skull, two cervical verte- brae, a partial left humerus, a partial left ulna, a partial left radius, a right pelvic girdle, a nuchal, a right first costal, a). Its type locality is La Buitrera (upper), which is in a Cenomanian/Turonian fluvial sandstone in the Huincul Formation of Argentina.
Ecology: amphibious piscivore
Distribution: found only at La Buitrera (upper)
