Belongs to Mergus according to R. Alvarez and S. L. Olson 1978
Sister taxa: Mergus australis, Mergus merganser, Mergus milleneri, Mergus serrator
Type specimen: USNM 237150, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Stratford Bluffs, Zone 12-13, which is in a Langhian marine horizon in the Calvert Formation of Virginia.
Ecology: volant herbivore
