Sister taxa: Melanerpeton arnhardti, Melanerpeton humbergense, Melanerpeton latirostre, Melanerpeton moravicum, Melanerpeton pusillum, Melanerpeton sembachense
Type specimen: MNG 2992-68, a skeleton. Its type locality is Gottlob quarry, Friedrichroda, which is in an Asselian fluvial-lacustrine horizon in the Goldlauterer Formation of Germany.
Ecology: amphibious carnivore
Distribution: found only at Gottlob quarry, Friedrichroda
