Sister taxon: Pachycetus paulsonii
Type specimen: USNM 310633, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Lanier Quarry (CM collection), which is in a Bartonian deep subtidal limestone in the Castle Hayne Formation of North Carolina.

• Eocene of United States (6: North Carolina, Virginia collections)
Total: 6 collections each including a single occurrence
