Sister taxa: Tapirus (Helicotapirus) haysii, Tapirus (Helicotapirus) veroensis
Type specimen: UF 160715, a partial skeleton (partial young adult skeleton with cranium, mandible, vertebrae, ribs, sternebrae, and fore- and hindlimb elements). Its type locality is Haile 7C, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Florida.
