Type specimens:

  • Megactenopetalus kaibabanus: Mus N. Ariz G2.2280, a set of teeth. Its type locality is Point Sublime, Grand Canyon north rim, which is in a Kungurian shallow subtidal limestone in the Kaibab Formation of Arizona.
  • Petalodus shingkuoi: Its type locality is Wutaishan, Liangfengya, Bazhong, which is in a Wuchiapingian carbonate limestone in China.

Ecology: nektonic carnivore

Distribution:

• Permian of China (2 collections), United States (6: Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas)

• Carboniferous of United States (1: Kansas)

Total: 9 collections each including a single occurrence
