Type specimens:

  • Protostega gigas: Its type locality is near Butte Creek, which is in a Coniacian/Santonian marine chalk in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas
  • Protostega dixie: CNHM P27314, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Moore Brothers Farm, which is in a Santonian/Campanian carbonate limestone in Alabama.
  • Protostega potens: AMNH 180, a partial skeleton (basioccipital and hyoplastron). Its type locality is near Elkader, which is in a Santonian offshore chalk in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas.

Ecology: aquatic omnivore

Distribution:

• Cretaceous of the Russian Federation (1 collection), United States (9: Alabama, Kansas)

Total: 10 collections each including a single occurrence
