Type specimens:

  • Hesperotestudo turgida: ANSP 14689, a partial shell (complete plastron and fragmentary carapace). Its type locality is North of Dockum, which is in a Miocene/Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Texas.
  • Geochelone alleni: UF 9370, a shell. Its type locality is McGehee Farm, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Alachua Formation of Florida.
  • Geochelone johnstoni: PPHM 1540 (holotype), a shell (complete shell). Its type locality is Cita Canyon, which is in a Blancan channel sandstone in Texas.
  • Geochelone mlynarskii: UF 18960 (holotype), a partial shell (partial plastron). Its type locality is Coleman IIA, which is in an Irvingtonian sinkhole claystone/sandstone in Florida.
  • Geochelone oelrichi: UMMP 56298 (holotype), a partial skeleton (partial shell with associated appendicular elements).
  • Testudo incisa: USNM 8821, a partial shell (complete left xiphiplastron). Its type locality is Ocala (precise locality unknown), which is in a Pleistocene marine horizon in the Ocala Formation of Florida.
  • Testudo riggsi: KU 6789 (holotype), a shell (nearly complete shell).
  • Testudo wilsoni: TMM No. 933-3585, a shell (almost complete shell).
