Sister taxa: Styxosaurus browni, Styxosaurus snowii, Thalassonomosaurus marshii

Type specimen: AMNH 1495, a partial skeleton (the entire vertebral column, with the exception of a few anterior cervical and distal caudal vertebrae; the pectoral arch, with the clavicles and a good deal br). Its type locality is Bluff on southwest side of Missouri River, which is in a Campanian/Campanian marine shale in the Pierre Shale Formation of Nebraska.
