Minqar Tibaghbagh (Eocene of Egypt)

Also known as Qattara Depression, Minqar Tabaghbagh

Where: Egypt (29.2° N, 27.4° E: paleocoordinates 24.6° N, 23.5° E)

• coordinate stated in text

When: Daba'a Formation, Priabonian (38.0 - 33.9 Ma)

• early Priabonian

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lagoonal; poorly lithified, fine-grained, gray sandstone

• El Beialy et al. (2019) investigated the Dabaa Formation in the southern Qattara Depression and argued that the palynological assemblages reflect fluctuating conditions on the southern margin of the Tethys/Paratethys Ocean, with the frequent co-occurrence of Homotryblium floripes, Pediastrum and Botryococcus reflecting restricted and probably lagoonal marine environments influenced by seasonal river inflow.
• Dinoflagellates studied by El Beialy et al. (2019) were extracted by standard methods, suggesting poorly lithified lithology.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original phosphate
