Tuinkraal (Permian of South Africa)

Also known as Thuynkraal, Thuynskraal

Where: Western Cape, South Africa (33.0° S, 21.7° E: paleocoordinates 59.6° S, 37.9° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Eodicynodon Assemblage zone, Abrahamskraal Formation (Beaufort Group), Wordian (268.8 - 265.1 Ma)

• Rubidge et al. (1994) solely state that the locality is assigned to the "Eodicynodon-Tapinocaninus assemblage zone" (renamed Eodicynodon AZ by Rubidge et al., 1995 SACS Biostrat. Ser. 1). Beds belonging to this biozone are lithostratigraphically classified as the deepest part of the Abrahamskraal Fm. of the Beaufort Group and are regarded to be Wordian in age (see comments on stratigraphy in PBDB collection 94649, vertebrate locality Modderdrift, and references cited therein).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; mudstone and sandstone

• Rubidge et al. (2000, S. Afr. J. Geol. 103(1)) interpret the basal Abrahamskraal Fm. as non-marine part of a second-order highstand systems tract.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: NMQR = National Museum, Bloemfontein, South Africa

• NMQR 2992 consists of postcranial remains "found associated with cranial material and we can therefore be confident of the generic identification"; furthermore, the authors (Rubidge et al., 1994) explicitly say that the remains represent the species E. oosthuizeni.
