Where: Cyprus (35.1° N, 33.7° E: paleocoordinates 26.5° N, 28.8° E)
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Lefkara Formation, Thanetian (59.2 - 56.0 Ma)
• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Lefkara Formation, which overlies the Kannaviou Fm (Campanian-Maastrichtian), and is overlain by the Pakhna Fm (Early-Middle Miocene). AGE: Ypresian, on the basis of radiolarian and foraminiferal biostratigraphy; planktonic foram zone P5; radiolarian zone RP7. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From 9 m in inset of figure 3.
• bed-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, cherty/siliceous chalk
Size class: microfossils
Collection methods: bulk, hydroflouric, sieve,
• PREPARATION TECHNIQUES: The Yigitler chert samples were processed using the Pessagno and Newport (1972) technique using diluted hydrofluoric acid (5-10%). The extracted radiolarians and planktonic foraminifera have been studied using a Nikon SMZ-2B light microscope, and the SEM
•Cambridge Stereoscan 600 was used for more precise determinations and photographic work at METU, Department of Metalogeny Engineering. Cleaned radiolarian residues were sieved using a 63μm sieve,
•pipetted evenly onto labeled glass slides with an eyedropper, and the accompanying water evaporated without boiling. When completely dry, air was expelled from the skeletons by the addition
•of a few drops of xylene. The preparations are mounted in Canada balsam or Caedax according to the refractive index of the skeletons. Samples with a high proportion of large siliceous microfossils were separated by sieving into two size fractions: 63-150μm, and coarser than 150μm (Sanfilippo et al. 1985), and slides made from each fraction. Estimates, based on one slide, of total radiolarian abundance in each sample are expressed as trace (<150), R (rare >151 and <500), C (common >501 and <3000), and A (abundant >3001). COLLECTOR: Presumably the authors. REPOSITORY: Not stated in text.
