DV 553-1 [Pisco Fm] (Miocene of Peru)

Also known as LACMIP 17615

Where: Peru (14.6° S, 75.7° W: paleocoordinates 15.2° S, 72.5° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Pisco Formation, Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Pisco Fm, which regionally, unconformably overlies the Chilcatay Fm (late Oligocene-early Middle Miocene). AGE: early Middle Miocene to Late Pliocene on the basis of K/Ar dates, siliceous microfossil zonation, and molluscan biostratigraphy supports. Here assigned to the Middle Miocene on the basis of stratigraphic position and faunal similarity relative to Chilcatay Fm (Early Miocene). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position with formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, white, yellow siliciclastic sediments

• ENVIRONMENT: Not discussed in text, but appears to be from relatively shallow marine siliciclastic setting. High productivity, but also warmer than at the present day in the Peruvian upwelling zone.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: White and yellowish siliciclastic rocks. LITHIFICATION: Lithified based on figured specimens.

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by DeVries in 1987; reposited in the LACM

• COLLECTOR: DeVries, 1987. REPOSITORY: LACMIP, Los Angeles.
