• 3-5 cm thick phosphatic nodule bed; nodules have a maximum thickness of 4 cm and range in length from less than 2 to more than 40 cm; dark gray to black organic rich shale of a thickness ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 cm underlies and occurs within the interstices between the nodules
