Sapotal Fm, Bed Ch.G, Chicama Basin (Jurassic of Peru)

Where: Peru (7.6° S, 78.9° W: paleocoordinates 8.0° S, 45.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Sapotal Formation (Chicama Group), Late/Upper Tithonian (150.8 - 145.0 Ma)

• The fauna is ascribed to the Alternans zone of the Andean biochronological standard, which is probably equivalent to the Microcanthum zone of Europe, of early Late Tithonian age.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: prodelta; lithified, black shale and lithified, fine-grained sandstone

• The Sapotal Fm. is a thick series (300-700m) of black shales with thin layers of fine-grained sandstones deposited in a prodelta environment.
