Punta Moreno Fm, Bed COM.52, Chicama Basin (Jurassic of Peru)

Where: Peru (7.6° S, 78.9° W: paleocoordinates 8.0° S, 45.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Upper Member (Punta Moreno Formation), Late/Upper Tithonian (150.8 - 145.0 Ma)

• The fauna is ascribed to the Alternans zone of the Andean biochronological standard, which is probably equivalent to the Microcanthum zone of Europe, of early Late Tithonian age.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: delta front; lithified siliciclastic sediments

• The Punta Moreno Fm. includes two members. The lower member (850m) is made up of thick conglomerates, greywackes and lithic sandtones, deposited on a proximal turbiditic fan or a slope apron by high-density turbidity currents. The upper member (900m) expresses an evolution toward a slope environment characterized by feeding-channels, olistoliths and sedimentary slidings.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Collection methods: focus on ammonites
