When: Slaty Creek Formation, Darriwilian (467.3 - 458.4 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Derived from unnamed "member 2" of the Slaty Creek Formation. The Slaty Creek Fm overlies the Jimmy Creek Quartzite of the Aorangi Mine Fm. "Member 2" (Goldern Bay Gp, undifferentiated lower part) overlies member 1 (Roaring Lion Fm) and is overlain by "member 3". THICKNESS: 150 m in type section. AGE: Member 2 contains graptolites representing the lower part of the Zone of D. decoratus, of upper Darriwilian age. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Unknown position within member, middle part of Slaty Creek Fm.

Environment/lithology: basinal (); lithified, pyritic, black, blue, cherty/siliceous, carbonaceous shale

• ENVIRONMENT: Quiet bottom water, lack of circulation, plankton-rich, extreme paucity of incoming clastic detritus, slow persistent supply of biogenic silica. Environment of deposition presumed to be that of a starved offshore basin within or adjacent to a region of normal clastic deposition. Water depth likely to have been with the range of the bathyal depth zone.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Dark blue-grey to black carbonaceous, spotted, cleaved, pyritic siliceous shale. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, as text states lithology to be "cleaved".
