Cerros Bayos (Paleocene of Argentina)

Where: La Pampa, Argentina (37.7° S, 67.5° W: paleocoordinates 40.2° S, 55.9° W)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: PN1 nannofossil zone, Roca Formation, Danian (66.0 - 61.6 Ma)

• material from "two pelitic horizons located 2.5 and 13.5 meters below the base of the oyster bioherms". PJW: PN1 probably should be NP1

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal ramp; poorly lithified, yellow marl

• "distal platform environment at the base to lagoonal facies toward the top" of section; fossils are from lower half; on p. 6 the taxonomic association is said to "indicate a low energy pelitic sublittoral environment." Fossils are shown as being from a mudstone in section, presumably meaning a lime mudstone because formational lithology is "carbonates". Section consists of greenish marls intercalated with thin coquinas that are lenticular and have planar or erosive lower contacts. The coquinas suggest storm deposits, indicating a deep subtidal environment.
• yellowish-whitish marine carbonates

Size class: macrofossils
