Quisisana-Certosa (Pleistocene of Italy)

Where: Capri Island, Italy (40.6° N, 14.2° E: paleocoordinates 40.5° N, 14.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

When: Middle Pleistocene (0.8 - 0.1 Ma)

• Late Middle Pleistocene, based on fauna. There are two localites (Quisisana and Certosa) in a south sloping terrace and several collections dating back to 1901 are included in this faunal list. They have all been referred to 'Quisisana-Certosa'. The site has been controversial because of the possible association of stone tools with Middle Pleistocene faunas.

Environment/lithology:

• The lithology has been descibed by several different authors as 'lacustrine oxidised clays, with vertebrate bones and chert artefacts.', 'Red clays dipping west without volcanic minerals and with vertebrate bones. The upper portion of this level bears lithic artefacts.' and 'Red clays (= 'Lehm' Auct.) with an acheulean industry in the upper part, overlying Middle Pleistocene vertebrate remains' (Other layers with Late Pleistocene remains overlie this).

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: Fossils stored at the Museum of the Sezione Caprense 'Ignazio Cerio' of the Instituto Italiano di Palaeontologia Umana, in Museo di Paleontologia, University of Naples 'Frederico II' and Instituto Italiano di Palaeontologia Umana, Rome.
