Site 686 ODP Leg 112 Late Pleistocene Peru (Pleistocene of Peru)

Where: Peru (13.5° S, 76.9° W: paleocoordinates 13.5° S, 76.7° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Pleistocene (2.6 - 0.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: marine; unlithified, diatomaceous, gray, green mudstone

• The benthic foraminiferal assemblage indicate an outer shelf or slightly shallower environment. However, the concentration of Calyptraea shells in diatomaceous muds, the poor preservation of adult specimens, displaced nannoplankton, diatoms, and silicoflagellates from the lower Miocene and middle to upper Eocene suggest these assemblages have been transported from shallower waters.
• Mollusks were encountered at several levels including a olive gray diatomaceous mud.

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: core,
