Where: Libya (24.0° N, 17.0° E: paleocoordinates 19.9° N, 13.1° E)
• coordinate stated in text
• local area-level geographic resolution
When: Evaporite Member, Late/Upper Eocene (37.2 - 33.9 Ma)
• Paleogene section is 100 ft (30 m) thick and similar and correlatable to the Eocene-Oligocene Qasr el Sagha and Gebel Qatrani Formations of Fayium, Egypt. These sediments (no formation name) are subdivided into three units from bottom to top: the Evaporite Unit, the Idam Unit, and the Sadr Unit. The Evaporite Unit contains upper Eocene oyster beds with Ostrea clotbeyi and Ostrea cubitus at the base and grades laterally into chert and dolomitic limestones and upwards into limestones and marls with gypsym. The unit directly overlies the Precambrian basement and is overlain by the lower Oligocene Idam Unit.
• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified, gypsiferous, shelly/skeletal, cherty/siliceous limestone and dolomitic, gypsiferous claystone
Size class: macrofossils
Collection methods: No detailed collection data reported.
