• Wadi Rayan Formation is upper Lutetian (Eocene) and largely composed of glauconitic limestones. Wadi Rayan Formation is correlated to the Tanka Formation in the Gulk of Suez. To the west of Birket Qarun lake, the Wadi Rayan Formation is 70 m (230 ft) thick and overlain by the Ravine beds.
