• this bed lies between beds 3 and 4, and has a thickness approximately 2 ft, and in places only [occurs as] an interrupted strip of ironstone with the shells thickly interspersed in the marls above and below

Environment/lithology: concretionary, ferruginous, argillaceous marl and ferruginous, shelly/skeletal packstone

• This bed is a consolidated, often highly ferruginous band of mingled broken and entire shells forming a white line in the cliff, and a white streak among the fallen and upturned beds on the shore. The Hempstead Strata are shales and marls with a variety of colors (green, blue, red, yellow, gray) and some feruginous concretions.
