• "The 'First' or 'Six inch' coal at Stalybridge, Cheshire (lower Westphalian A), which is slightly below the Union seam (Stopes and Watson, 1908)... Stopes and Watson described the occurrence of coal balls in a coal seam referred to as 'First coal' on a horizon much below the 'Upper Foot' coal. This flora...is considered as slightly older than any other coal-ball flora in Lancashire and Yorkshire." (Galtier 1997)
