Horlick Formation lithofacies 6 (Devonian of Antarctica)

Where: Antarctica (84.8° S, 115.0° W: paleocoordinates 34.6° S, 175.6° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Horlick Formation, Early/Lower Devonian (419.2 - 393.3 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; phosphatic, shelly/skeletal sandstone

• The marine lithofacies 1-8 are interpreted as "shallow inner shelf to shoreline, where storms produced a changing pattern of coarse sand bars and finer troughs." Lithofacies 6 interpreted as "lag deposits on the seaward flanks of outer shoreface sand-tongues"
• "Very thin, usually poorly sorted sandstones, containing a high proportion of phosphatic clasts, including inarticulate brachiopods, trilobite fragments, fish material, and rounded pebbles of phosphatized mudstone. Fragmented shells also occur. It grades laterally into Lithofacies 3."

Collection methods: Taxa are listed as Present, Abundant, Rare.
