Cliffield Formation, Five Oaks Limestone Member, North Tazewell (Ordovician of the United States)

Where: Tazewell County, Virginia (37.1° N, 81.5° W: paleocoordinates 29.6° S, 61.7° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Five Oaks Limestone Member (Cliffield Formation), Caradoc (458.4 - 449.5 Ma)

• Whiterockian

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: gray limestone

• fresh surfaces are characteristically dove gray, but weathered surfaces are generally white or light gray; limestones contain euhedral rhombs of calcite 0.5 to 8 mm in diameter, which are enclosed by exceedinly fine calcite grains; the beds break with a furrowed conchoidal fracture similar to that of many so-called lithographic limestones; also known as a calcilutyte.
