Wellington Formation clay layers Kay County Oklahoma (Permian of the United States)

Where: Kay County County, Oklahoma (36.9° N, 97.3° W: paleocoordinates 4.3° N, 25.8° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Wellington Formation, Permian (298.9 - 251.9 Ma)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; gray, calcareous claystone

• Relatively shallow marine environment where ecological conditions were not conductive to the development of an extensive lycopsid-sphenopsid-filicinean flora, and the dominant floral elements seem to have been of upland types.

•Other ecological interpretations of Wellington Formation by other authors:

•Shaffer (1964) studied the middle portion of the Wellington Formation (Hutchinson Salt Member, Rice and Reno Counties, Kansas): two ecological contrasting floral realms: mesic lowlands and upland areas.

•Hedlund (1965) also studied the Wellington Formation (135 miles south of Kansas locaties of Shaffer): swamp-type floras/marginal swamp environment.

•The assemblage from Bond is located midway between the localities of Shaffer and Hedlund.

• assemblage collected from two beds: 1: clay, dark gray calcareous bed and 2: clay, gray calcareous bed.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: original sporopollenin

Collection methods: bulk, chemical, mechanical,

• Brachiopods of Derbia? genus also recorded to be present
