Talbragar Beds (Jurassic to of Australia)

Also known as PGAP 24

Where: New South Wales, Australia (32.2° S, 149.7° E: paleocoordinates 73.1° S, 84.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Purlawaugh Formation, Oxfordian to Oxfordian (163.5 - 145.0 Ma)

• Hind and Helby (1969), cited by White (1981), gave age as 'Early to Middle Jurassic', but implied that age was more probably J1, since the flora occurs 'close to the base of the unit' (of the Purlawaugh Beds)

•JA: Woodward (1895) gives the age as "upper Jurassic... not earlier than the Upper Lias, and may be referable to the Lower Oolites" based on the fauna; see comments on other Talbragar collections for current age assignment; thickness of the "bed" is "about ten feet"

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; lithified, ferruginous shale

• "laminated, hard, siliceous shales, cherty in places, rendered ochreous by ferruginous infiltrations, and traversed by joints" also said to be a "hard ferruginous flagstone"

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression

Collected by Arthur Lowe, Charles Cullen, T. W. Edgeworth David, Edward F. Pittman; reposited in the BMNH
