South Pass (Lostcabinian) (Eocene of the United States)

Also known as The Pinnacles

Where: Fremont County, Wyoming (42.4° N, 108.9° W: paleocoordinates 47.2° N, 92.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Lostcabinian zone, Main Body Member (Wasatch Formation), Wasatchian (55.8 - 50.3 Ma)

• Clyde et al. 2001 took paleomagnetic samples through this part of the section but they were too poorly preserved to analyze

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; brown shale

• fossils are from "channel lags, sheet wash concentrations, and along ancient lake 'strand lines'"
• "thick brown paper shales"

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
