Environment/lithology: marine; gray, argillaceous limestone and shelly/skeletal, yellow, calcareous shale

• "Shells mostly articulated. Small size of H. is consistent with quiet, shallow water, soft, level bottom. "
• "Occurs in dark gray, thin-bedded, argillaceous limestone interbedded with yellowish-brown, calcareous shale. Howellella is most abundant in the shale interbeds, whereas the other taxa are most abundant in the limestone. [H. forms coquinas.]"
